ABYC & IMCI Announce New Component Certification Programme
A new component certification programme that confirms the compliance of tested samples of marine components with the performance requirements in the current applicable ABYC standards. The American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) is the nonprofit organisation responsible for developing safety standards for the marine industry.
Now ABYC has contracted IMCI to conduct the component certification program globally. Components with valid certificates will gain approved marketing usage of the ‘Certified to ABYC Standards’ logo as well as increased visibility through an online certified component listing.
“Today’s customer demands products and services that are high quality, reliable, consistent, and safe, but many don’t realise that there are few Federal regulations for the design and construction of recreational boats and their components,” said Craig Scholten, ABYC technical vice president. “This new component certification program adds confidence to the supply chain integrity by having third party verification that components have indeed been tested and comply with the latest ABYC safety standards.”
Component manufacturers have two options available for component testing:
- Option 1: Select an IMCI approved laboratory for component testing.
- Option 2: Gain in-house laboratory component testing approval through IMCI’s laboratory assessment program. Once the in-house laboratory is approved for conformance with IMCI laboratory procedures, the component manufacturer can proceed with testing and submit test reports for component certification.
Laboratories can conduct tests to multiple requirements, providing test reports for compliance to both ABYC and ISO standards. IMCI will provide certificates declaring compliance to ABYC standards or for ISO compliance.
